In an article by the Huffington Post, Women Are Underrepresented in Politics, they talk about why women are underrepresented and why it's not what we think it is. I'm an advocate for feminism, most notably women's equality, and I found that it was exactly why I thought. Women are underrepresented in politics because they are not encouraged to get involved with politics because it's a "man's job". Women in politics or in high power positions are constantly harassed for a number of things, such as whether or not they are capable of doing their jobs during "that time of the month" or, like they mentioned in this article, if they have enough time to balance family and their jobs. Family, according to the article, is not an important factor in whether or not a woman decides to run for office. Men and women who answered questions surrounding family and their jobs answered very similar to one another, suggesting that the common belief that women need to focus on family before running for president is not valid. In another survey, a question was proposed asking people if they believe our political culture would be different if we had more women in office. I believe that our political culture would be vastly different if more women were elected into office.
If more women were elected into office, not only would the genders and gender-related issues be represented and addressed better, but the attitude towards women in the workplace would most likely changed positively. If a women was elected to be the president, then attitudes would have to be changed. A woman is leading the country for the next 4 to 8 years and we have to put faith in her judgement, not her gender. So I think that attitudes would change positively for that reason. I also think that having more women would make having gender related issues go by more smoothly. For example, when Texas wanted to make abortion illegal and close down all of the abortion clinics in the state, the vast majority of people deciding that were older men, not women who it would directly impact. If we have a room of men deciding what a women's reproductive rights are, doesn't that feel a little wrong? Wendy Davis stood up for her and other women's rights, but that was one woman. Where was everyone else? If more women were elected into office, maybe it wouldn't be up to a bunch of old men to decide what I can and cannot do with my body. My reproductive rights really aren't my own. I strongly believe that women should be encouraged to run for office, as we desperately need more equality in the political world.
There needs to be more representation as a whole in this society. We need to have more people of color represented, more LGBT+ folk represented, and more women. The country is ruled by one group of people. Mostly, it's white men. America is best represented by the people that live in it, not just one subset of people.
