After watching the Democratic Debate the other day, it only rekindled my undying love for Bernie Sanders. He is my favorite candidate, and the one I am most likely going to be voting for next year. Watching him during the debate was spectacular, but I want to talk a little bit about Hilary. Although she said some fair points and I did agree with her on what she had to say occasionally, there was a ton of things that she mentioned that I felt very opposed to and almost shocked about.
When she was talking about healthcare for immigrants and their children, she completely neglected to mention anything about the parents receiving healthcare, and used phrases such as "buying into" making me think that her intentions were not pure of heart. She also mentioned previously in the debate how America needs to make a profit, showing off a more capitalist side of her. A number of what she spoke about, such as the TPP trade agreement and gun violence were either very misleading or false. For example, she said she "hoped the agreement would set the gold standard" while she actually believed and put her full confidence into the fact it WAS the gold standard. When she mentioned gun violence, she said 90 deaths a day are due to guns, which is true, but not all of them are from homicide. She made it seem as though it was, and neglected talking about possible police brutality and gun related suicide.
The way Hilary spoke was pointed in the direction of politics, but a huge chunk of what she was saying was mostly about her. The debates are meant to show you who the politicians are, but she almost used it as a way to get herself out there, and not her politics. She was trying so desperately to target what ethos she has behind her, or make us feel for her, but it turned from her politics and into a conversation about herself, in my opinion. When asked how she would make her presidency different than Obama's, her first response was (paraphrased), "It's obvious. I would be the first female president." Which, yes she would be the first female president. But what else do you have to offer? I'm asking you why you would make a good president! Yes, we should have had a female president long ago because sexism is horrible, but does that make you a good president? Does that alone make me want to vote for you? No. It does not. It makes me feel inclined to vote for you since I definitely want a female president, but when it comes to the leader of our country, I want a president who's politics I agree with, and not just their gender that sets them aside from the rest. It's an attempt to make yourself seem like a better candidate that you are. I want a president who won't say anything to get into office, won't lie to us to make us like her better, and maybe has an actual plan to get America out of it's horrifically severe debt, horrible racial inequality, and maybe help us make America less of a debilitatingly capitalist society.
On another note not pertaining to how she, embarrassingly, thinks that she's the "girl power" icon of America, she also has so many receipts that I don't trust her as a president. She changes her opinions and stance so often, how can I trust her to run a country? She's thinking "in the moment" so to speak about gay rights, the environment, and others. She also is so harsh on her policies surrounding when to jump in and take military action. I'm sorry, but I don't really want a trigger happy president in the office.
So in conclusion, Hilary Clinton is a mess, and Bernie Sanders was the only candidate that actually had anything of substance and value to say.
