La Poesía de la Comida
For this project, we chose a Spanish-speaking country, and looked up from traditional or popular foods from that country. After finding a recipe to use, we wrote an ode about the food. An ode praises the food, and so we praised our food and translated our recipe into Spanish. Then, we cooked the food for final exhibition.
Project reflection I really loved this project. Cooking is one of my favorite things to do, so cooking for a project was really fun. I'm a huge fan of sweets, so I cooked flan. It's a popular dish in Spain, and quiet challenging to make. Even if it looks uncooked on the outside, if the internal temperature is a certain degree, then you have to stop cooking it. It makes the cooking process long and tedious, but it was a pleasure to make. Writing the ode for this project, too, was great fun. But I did run into trouble trying to word everything right. I'm becoming more and more proficient in Spanish, but poetry often "abandons" a lot of common grammar rules. It's called a poetic license, and it was hard maneuvering around the rules of Spanish along with the rules of poetry.

Los Cuentos Infantiles
In this project, we all wrote a children's book in Spanish. We learned about what makes a children's book a children's book, and we then applied that to a "life in Durango" book to figure out how we wanted to style our final book. After that, we drafted and created our final book. And lastly, we all went to an elementary school to read our books to 2nd graders.
Reflection This project was a lot of fun. I was really stressed out about how the project would look, because I'm not really much of a visual artist. My favorite part of the project was the reading; I made voices and moved my body around to the book and had the kids guess what words meant and I questioned them about the book. The reading was a lot of fun, and I think that's what I did really well on. I put a lot of effort into this project, even more so than I have in the past. I refined my book to the best of my ability and I think that I did really well on this project.

My story |
Dia de los Muertos
This project was centered about The Day of the Dead, or rather Dìa de Los Muertos, which is a celebration to honor the dead and invite those who have passed to return again for a few days to visit the living. We created a calavera, which is a poem about the person you're tributing to, and we created an art piece called a calaca, and is usually a skeletal figurine of the person the poem is about.
Abuela
Abuela. |

Project Reflection
What I learned from this project was that the Spanish have an incredibly beautiful outlook on death. Yes, it's going to be a very hard time for those who knew the person, but Dìa de Los Muertos was a chance to be with them again, and is kind of a way to lighten the idea of death. It's fairly similar to what my family has adopted, that instead of mourning someone's death, we should celebrate their life. The exhibition was so wonderful; we had an ofrenda, which is an alter where we put pictures of the people we were tributing or things that remind us of them, and it stands as a signal welcoming them in. It was a really warm, safe place to be. I think that because we were dealing with the subject of death, a lot of people were really careful about the questions they would ask us, but some really had adopted the idea of Dìa de Los Muertos and asked a lot of amazing, in depth questions. It was truly an outstanding feeling, and through the air thick with incense, it was like I could feel my grandmother's presence there with me that night. I loved it.
The most challenging aspect of this project for me was painting a picture; I'm not an artist, and I've never used paint as an art medium before. I did, however, work my way around it and created what I see as a beautiful piece of art with my current abilities. If I could have done something differently, I probably would have spent more time giving this painting a background. It's supposed to be stormy Kansas, and I feel I captured a stormy feel, but I would have added much more detail, more detail to the butterfly, and created just a more beautiful piece of art. I'm proud of myself for taking on a new art medium to focus on in this project, though. I really loved seeing my ideas change and my art change right before my eyes with one brush stroke and it felt really free and really really amazing. I'm proud that I took on that personal challenge.
