Project Proposal
My LINK internship will be at Animas High School, where I’m assistant teaching with Sara Price, a freshman humanities teacher. Animas High School is a dream job of mine if I were to choose teaching as a future career, as their education is so personalized and high-tech that I feel as though it’s very applicable to the students once they leave school and become an active member of the community. Sara Price is a freshman humanities teacher and my former teacher of mine. She is a friend and a wonderful teacher, and inspired me to want to teach in the future. I’m hoping that Sara can lend to me some of her excitement for education and passion for teaching. I’m hoping that she can also teach me how to be a good educator on a larger scale than inside of a classroom. I want to be able to come out of my shell when it comes to sharing information and helping others make connections between their personal life and their educational career. I want to also learn the technicalities of teaching and how to do it well. This internship will help me become a better educator on a larger scale as well as for small scale things such as when I am working with younger tech hands in my theatrical productions.
The project that Sara and I have decided on is I will be creating a lesson plan for her class during their happiness project. We’ve talked about how important movement is in education, so we’re hoping to find ways to instill movement into the lesson plans for not only my plan, but also her plans as well. I’m striving to help the students connect to the content, understand the content, and have more fun while they are learning. This will create a better educational experience for these students. It will contribute to the culture of Animas High School when the students are excited about their learning, and the greater community as young adults are getting excited about their education, which is something that I don’t see very often among high schoolers. Because we plan to instill movement into the teaching methods, I am researching different kinds of movement teaching methods and how they work. I’m going to be getting Sara’s assistance when it comes to applying them to lesson plans, but prior to the internship I am going to be researching methods, why they are effective, and how they are best used. I have had some experience in teaching younger kids when I was a freshman in high school with my experience as an assistant stage manager for The Little Mermaid. I had to teach younger kids how to work certain tools, how to build props and sets, and behavioral expectations in a theatrical setting. I’m also a large part in the production of Mary Poppins this semester, where I am going to be working with the props crew and teaching them and running them. I am going to take what I learn from Mary Poppins and apply it to my teaching, and take what I learn from teaching and apply it to Mary Poppins.
The steps I will need to complete to create my LINK project, I am going to have to work alongside Sara Price during her planning periods and her class work time to learn what makes a good lesson plan, and then take that home as “teacher homework” in order to refine the plan. I assume that I will be creating or co-creating lesson plans with Sara, and maybe teaching a few of her lessons. I will ensure that I complete this project because I need to meet time expectations and “due dates” as a teacher so I can help other people learn and meet their own due dates. This will ensure that I complete at least one lesson plan or co-written/taught lesson plan by the end of the LINK internship. I am very confident in my ability to turn out at least one lesson plan in a three week period.
At the beginning of the school year, I wanted to intern with a poet in order to further my capabilities in poetry, namely spoken word poetry. It’s a talent and passion of mine that I had been planning to pursue, but the desire to teach was calling out to me so I decided that I wanted to teach. For a short while, I was confused on where I would teach and what I could do for my LINK project. It took me a little while to figure out that I am currently in a school, and that I could help teach the classes below me. The process was fairly simple, as I just spoke to Sara about the possibility of me teaching alongside her during second semester. She was happy to work with me and jumped onto the boat straight away, having the forms signed and sent in very quickly and getting the internship set up. There were no real challenges in setting up this internship, so the process was very smooth.
I am extremely excited for my LINK internship, as I get to work with a former teacher and someone I consider to be a friend. I am very excited to not only work with my fantastic mentor, but also I will be able to teach freshman in a project that I absolutely adored. I have already befriended some of the freshman in her class, perhaps making my future job a little bit easier for me. I’m also looking forward to teaching, which is something that I’ve always enjoyed and been curious about. So this internship will not only be an enjoyable experience, but it’ll allow me to experiment with what I want to do with my life and influence what I am going to be doing in college and the years after. I’m very excited and a little nervous, hoping I’m going to do a good job at teaching some of my fellow peers, who are only a little bit younger than me.
