Last night was the second GOP debate of the 2016 presidential elections. And last night was meant to exhibit the best of the Republican party running for president this year, and it turned aggressive fast. Many valid points were made throughout the debate, but many major subjects were not covered or not answered during this debate. Was it because the arguing went too far? I think so. There are many issues facing this country today, most notably foreign policy and border control (among the Republican party), but one of the most important issues that I feel is facing the people in this country is the issue surrounding civil rights. While same sex marriage was legalized, there are still many people who are very opposed to the idea. Most recently, a woman refused to grant marriage licenses to same sex couples and was taken to court. While it is not a constitutional right to marry whomever you please, she did not get into any major trouble for breaking a constitutional law and is even being protected by some of the candidates. Ben Carson in particular seems to not believe that same sex marriage is for the better, saying that being homosexual is a choice and that marriage should not be granted to them for that reason. Is seems silly, right? He even likened homosexuality to pedophilia, which he later apologized for. This shows his perspective on same sex couples. I, personally, would be concerned if he was in office with these sort of perspectives on certain American citizens. Many of his points were made before same sex marriage was legalized, and now that it is a right for all the people to marry whomever they love, he may have a different perspective or may approach the issue in a different light, but I'm worried that Carson may take us two steps back when we just made three steps forward with gay marriage.
